Steve Perry, born on January 22, in Hanford, California, grew up in a Portuguese-American household.

His father, a singer and radio station at KNGS (620 AM) in Kings County, California deeply influenced Steve’s early love for music.

At age eight Perry moved with his mother to his grandparents' dairy farm in San Joaquin Valley, California.

On Perry’s 12th birthday, a gold eighth-note pendant gifted by his mother symbolized his musical destiny.

Inspired by artists like Sam Cooke, Perry began singing in school choirs and talent shows, setting the stage for his future career.

Steve Perry's "Oh Sherrie" is his debut solo single, released in March 1984 as part of his album Street Talk. Co-written with Randy Goodrum, Craig Krampf, and Bill Cuomo, the song was inspired by and dedicated to Perry's then-girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford, who also appeared in the music video. The track became Perry's biggest solo hit, peaking at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song's success was bolstered by its MTV-heavy music video, which showcased Swafford and Perry's chemistry. Musically, it features a memorable keyboard riff by Cuomo and a dramatic a cappella intro suggested by Perry. Despite being a solo effort, its sound closely resembles Journey’s style, leading some to consider it an "honorary" Journey track.

Steve Perry was inspired to write "Oh Sherrie" by his then-girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford, during a challenging period in their relationship. At the time, Perry was navigating the pressures of Journey's peak success, which strained their romance. The song reflects his emotional struggles and deep feelings for Swafford. Co-writer Randy Goodrum helped Perry channel these emotions into lyrics, focusing on the tension in their relationship. The track's iconic opening was influenced by Perry's admiration for the Four Tops' "Bernadette," and Swafford herself appeared in the music video, adding authenticity to the song's heartfelt message.
