History of Manhattan's Diamond District

The Manhattan Diamond District originated in the 1790s on Maiden Lane. It moved to West 47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the 1940s, spurred by European Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Fenimore Goode played a significant role in developing this new location.

The district's trade is enormous — with daily transactions reaching about $400 million and roughly $24 billion annually.
