Beer is the most democratic drink and the most consolidated industry. Eleven groups brew the overwhelming majority of the world's volume — one of them, AB InBev, brews a quarter of it — and beneath them a craft tier of thousands of independents supplies nearly all of the industry's invention. This guide profiles both tiers: the majors with their flagship brands and dated volumes, and a defensible selection of the craft breweries that matter, continent by continent.
The craft entries are written as status reports, not nostalgia. The tier's founding generation has largely been sold, rescued or absorbed, and the entries say which: New Belgium to Kirin, Stone to Sapporo, Brooklyn into restructuring, Mikkeller retrenched with Carlsberg inside the tent, and BrewDog — the loudest story in modern beer — through administration into the hands of a cannabis-and-drinks group for £33 million, its chief-executive office abolished. What remains genuinely independent at scale (Sierra Nevada, Duvel Moortgat, Deschutes, Heaven Hill's beer cousins across the aisle) is identified as such.
Volumes are given as dated and sourced as the industry allows: the majors report hectolitres in their annual reports; American craft production is tracked by the Brewers Association in barrels; private groups that publish nothing carry an admission instead of an estimate dressed as a fact.

Region: Europe
HQ Country: United Kingdom (Scotland)
Founded: 2007
History: Founded in Fraserburgh in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie; "Equity for Punks" crowdfunding and relentless provocation made it the world's loudest craft brand, valued at about £1 billion in 2017 (TSG Partners). The ending was harder: losses, bar closures and a failed search for a buyer ended in administration in March 2026, from which Tilray Brands bought the brand, UK brewing operations and 11 brewpubs in a £33 million pre-pack deal; 38 bars closed immediately with 484 redundancies. CEO James Taylor departed in July 2026 and the chief-executive role was abolished; chief commercial officer Lauren Carrol runs the business day-to-day under Tilray International.
Ownership / Parent: Tilray Brands, Inc. (acquired from administration, March 2026)

Scale (dated): Revenue peaked at about £321 million (FY2022, company reporting); the March 2026 pre-pack valued the rescued core at £33 million — the two figures together are the entry's honest scale
Offices / Footprint: Ellon, Aberdeenshire (brewery); a reduced bar estate in the UK and Ireland; Tilray's beer division in the US
Website: brewdog.com
Contact Email: Not published
Phone: Per company site
HQ Address: Balmacassie Commercial Park, Ellon, Aberdeenshire AB41 8BX, United Kingdom

Access / Entry: Trade via Tilray's channels; the bars that remain trade under the brand
Notes: This entry is written as a status record, per the brief's instruction that Stone's and BrewDog's current positions be treated honestly: BrewDog is no longer independent, no longer founder-run and no longer growing — it is a rescued brand inside a cannabis-and-drinks group, and it is carried in this guide on that basis
Sources: brewdog.com; Tilray acquisition and restructuring reporting (March–July 2026: Just Drinks, Drinks Intel, Food Manufacture, Inside Beer)

METHOD, GAPS AND EXCLUSIONS
Tier boundary: the Majors are the world's largest brewing groups by volume. The Craft Tier selects for influence and standing, not size alone — Weihenstephan (1040) and Dupont anchor its heritage; Athletic represents the non-alcoholic category it created; Garage Project and Minerva carry Oceania and Latin America, where independent brewing is youngest.
Excluded by design: the great regional lager groups below world scale (they are numerous and honourable, and a regional guide may yet take them); pub companies and bar groups that do not brew; and cider/perry specialists. Constellation appears once as a company (in the Spirits guide) and once for its beer division (here), because the brief named the beer arm expressly and the two businesses share nothing but a parent.
