A spirit brand is an idea with a distillery attached. This guide maps the companies that develop and own those ideas — from Diageo's forty-brand empire to Lucas Bols, founded in 1575 and still independent — with each company's full portfolio named, its master distillers and blenders where the industry publishes them, and its scale dated.
The distinction from the companion Champagne & Spirits Houses guide is deliberate: that guide profiles the houses and marques — the cellars, the estates, the chefs de caves. This one profiles the owners — the listed groups, family companies and private houses that build, buy and sell the brands. Where an entry and a house overlap (Rémy Martin in both), the records are written to agree.
And one name belongs to neither present tense. Seagram — within living memory the largest drinks company on earth — was divided between Diageo and Pernod Ricard in 2001, and its marques were divided again in 2018. It closes this guide as a marked heritage entry, because the portfolios above cannot be understood without it: half the famous names in them arrived by that division.

HERITAGE — THE EMPIRE THAT WAS DIVIDED
20. THE SEAGRAM COMPANY — HERITAGE (BROKEN UP 2000–02)
United States / Canada — New York (and Montreal / Waterloo) · Founded 1857 (Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Waterloo) — dissolved as a drinks company 2001–02
Category: HERITAGE ENTRY — former spirits and entertainment empire
Region: North America
HQ Country: United States / Canada
Founded: 1857 (Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Waterloo) — dissolved as a drinks company 2001–02
History: HERITAGE ENTRY, CLEARLY MARKED: Joseph E. Seagram's Waterloo distillery (1857) passed in 1928 to Samuel Bronfman, who built Seagram into the largest distiller on earth — Chivas Regal, Crown Royal, Seagram's 7 Crown and VO, Seagram's Gin, Captain Morgan (created 1944), Mumm and Perrier-Jouët champagnes, Sandeman ports. Under his son Edgar Bronfman Sr. and grandson Edgar Bronfman Jr., the empire pivoted to entertainment (MCA/Universal, PolyGram, a DuPont stake's sale funding the turn). In 2000 the family sold: Vivendi took the entertainment assets (Vivendi Universal), and in December 2000 Diageo and Pernod Ricard jointly bought the drinks business for about US$8.15 billion, dividing it between them in 2001–02. The drinks company ceased to exist; only the brands — and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building on Park Avenue (1958), still the monument of corporate modernism — remain.
Ownership / Parent: Defunct as a company. Formerly the Bronfman family (Edgar Bronfman Jr., last chairman and CEO)
Leadership: No current leadership — the company no longer exists. Last chairman and CEO: Edgar Bronfman Jr.
Full C-Suite / Senior Leadership: Not applicable — defunct
Specialties: Was: the world's largest distiller — Scotch, Canadian whisky, gin, rum and champagne at global scale
Brand Portfolio (owned brands): The Seagram marques and where they live now (2026): Chivas Regal, The Glenlivet, Royal Salute, Martell — Pernod Ricard (2001). Crown Royal, Captain Morgan — Diageo (2001). Seagram's 7 Crown, Seagram's VO — Diageo, then sold to Sazerac (2018). Seagram's Extra Dry Gin — Diageo lineage, later sold on (Infinium Spirits). Mumm, Perrier-Jouët — Pernod Ricard (via Allied Domecq lineage and the 2001 division). Captain Morgan's spiced-rum empire descends directly from Seagram's 1944 creation
Master Distillers & Blenders: The Bronfman-era blending houses set the post-war template for global blended brands — their masters' work survives inside the successor companies named above
Clients / Customers: Its trade relationships passed to Diageo and Pernod Ricard in 2001–02
Scale (dated): At its peak the world's largest alcoholic-drinks company; the drinks business alone sold for about US$8.15 billion in 2000
Offices / Footprint: None — dissolved. The Seagram Building, 375 Park Avenue, New York, stands as its monument (now owned by RFR Holding)
Website: None (retired)
Contact Email: Not applicable
Phone: Not applicable
HQ Address: Formerly 375 Park Avenue, New York, NY, USA (the Seagram Building)
Distinctiveness: The proof that even the largest drinks empire is mortal — and that brands outlive companies: every Seagram marque in this entry still sells, somewhere in this guide, under another flag
Access / Entry: Not applicable — see the successor entries: Pernod Ricard and Diageo (the 2001 division), Sazerac (the 2018 onward sale)
Notes: Michael named Seagram's as his exemplar for this list. It is carried as heritage, with its brand diaspora traced house by house, because the modern spirits map — who owns Chivas, who owns Crown Royal, why Sazerac holds Seagram's VO — is the direct consequence of its division in 2001
Sources: The Seagram–Vivendi and Diageo/Pernod transaction record (2000–02); Diageo–Sazerac release (2018); company histories of the successor owners
METHOD, GAPS AND EXCLUSIONS
Portfolios name the brands each company owns or controls at October 2026, with divestments recorded as divested (Courvoisier, Finlandia, Svedka, Famous Grouse, Seagram's marques) so that a brand's movement can be traced from either side of a sale.
Private companies that publish no revenue (Bacardi, Sazerac, Heaven Hill, Mast-Jägermeister, Illva, Zamora) carry the scale marker the company itself offers — a brand position, a bottle count, a visitor number — labelled as such, never an invented turnover. Trade-press estimates, where used at all (Bacardi), are printed as estimates.
